Berlin/Cologne. Future Resources, the Interzero industry event that brings together leading experts from the packaging and recycling industry, will be held on 7 November 2024 in Cologne. On the agenda will be innovative approaches to closing loops and for developing sustainable packaging solutions. This year’s event is entitled ‘Future Resources – Together for Change’ and offers a platform for knowledge transfer, the development of new ideas and the promotion of partnerships within the industry. Matthias Laux, editor for the industry magazine packREPORT, will be hosting the event and chairing plenty of lively discussions. “We are bringing together different players from across the sector to learn from each other and create new opportunities within the supply chain,” said Frank Kurrat, CEO of the Interzero Recycling Alliance. “In doing so, we are all pursuing a common goal: to close loops sustainably and thus make a real contribution to protecting our environment.”

A wide-ranging event programme

One key agenda item for the event will be the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which introduces significant requirements and challenges for businesses. Anna Kupferschmitt, Head of European Policy and Communication at AVU, will explain the impact of this new legislation on the industry and point out ways in which companies can best prepare for compliance. Gunda Rachut, Chair of the Central Agency Packaging Register, will talk about recycling-friendly packaging design and the state of play within Germany and at EU level.  Another highlight of the event will be the keynote from Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf, a leading expert on the topic of climate change. Rahmstorf will present the most recent data on the climate crisis and discuss ways in which the industry can act together to manage these challenges.

Future Resources will also be addressing topical issues like greenwashing. Christoph Goeken, founder of info.link by house of change, will introduce the EU’s proposed legislation on green claims, and talk about strategies and tools for formulating green claims that are authentic and legally compliant.

Laura Dörfler will provide insights into share’s business model and talk about the challenges and opportunities for start-ups in the field of sustainable packaging. Martin Schröder, Managing Director of FKN, will give a presentation on the innovative recycling methods that are revolutionising beverage carton recycling and have the potential to boost the circular economy.

The best practice part of the programme will introduce two interesting products, both of which recently won the 2024 German Packaging Award. Dr Julia Eberhardt from LEEB Flexibles will be presenting PureWrap PP, an innovative wrap made from 100% polypropylene that was developed for maturing cheese with an explicit focus on recyclability. Susan Janssen will talk about Wipak’s innovative and disruptive alternative to the yoghurt pot: available in PP or PE, this packaging can be reliably sorted throughout the EU and processed by high-quality material recycling methods. This avoids the need to separate out the individual components of a yogurt pot and ensures high-quality recycling without consumer effort. Another highlight, to be presented by Susanne Zobel-Reusch, is the first adhesive-free coffee bag, which requires no additional lamination. Polifilm has developed an innovative film that is manufactured in a single step on the blown film extruder without needing to be laminated and bonded. This not only saves energy and cuts costs but also significantly increases recyclability.

Future Resources 2024 is an outstanding opportunity for industry professionals to discuss sustainable packaging innovations and discover new approaches for promoting a sustainable value chain. Together, we can work to close loops and make a decisive contribution to improving our environment.
